Here’s what’s worth knowing this week – from guided walks to a new city-centre voting hub.

Walking Festival returns with 60+ guided walks across the city

The Milton Keynes Walking Festival is back this May, with more than 60 guided walks taking place across the city’s parks, woodlands and green spaces.

Running from 6 to 10 May, the festival offers something for all ages and abilities – from relaxed nature strolls and heritage walks to longer routes for more experienced walkers.

Organised by The Parks Trust, the event is designed to help people explore different parts of the city while enjoying the simple benefits of being outdoors.

Walks will take place in locations including Ouzel Valley Park, Howe Park Wood and Campbell Park, with many led by knowledgeable guides sharing insights into local wildlife, history and landscape.

Most walks are free to attend, although some require advance booking due to limited spaces.

It’s one of the easiest ways to discover parts of Milton Keynes you might never normally visit – whether you’re new to the area or have lived here for years.

Ping Pong Parlour to become MK’s first city-centre voting hub

A table tennis venue in Midsummer Place will be transformed into a central voting hub for Milton Keynes’ local elections on Thursday 7 May.

The Ping Pong Parlour, located near Waterstones, will allow residents from anywhere in the city to cast their vote in one central location, rather than needing to attend their usual polling station.

The initiative is part of a government pilot designed to make voting more convenient and accessible. While several areas are trialling new approaches, Milton Keynes is the only place testing a fully centralised voting hub.

Voters will still need to be registered and bring valid photo ID, and systems will ensure that each person can only vote once.

The hub will be open from 7am to 10pm, in line with standard polling hours.

If successful, the trial could shape how people vote in future elections – making it easier to fit voting into everyday routines.

Drivers urged to slow down as fox cubs appear near busy MK roads

Drivers in Milton Keynes are being urged to take extra care on the roads as fox cubs begin to appear across the area.

Spring is the peak time for young foxes leaving their dens, and they are often seen near roads as they explore their surroundings for the first time.

Wildlife experts are warning that cubs can be unpredictable and may suddenly run into traffic, particularly in quieter residential areas and along grid roads near green spaces.

Motorists are being asked to slow down, stay alert and be especially cautious at dawn and dusk when foxes are most active.

Residents are also advised not to approach or handle cubs, as their parents are usually nearby and will return.

It’s a reminder that wildlife is much closer to home than many people realise – even in built-up parts of the city.

Careers events to inspire green-thinking teens in Milton Keynes

Teenagers are being invited to explore careers in nature and the outdoors at a series of upcoming events hosted by The Parks Trust.

A careers showcase will take place at the Education Centre in Howe Park Wood on Thursday 28 May, giving young people the chance to meet the team behind the city’s parks and green spaces.

Visitors will be able to see equipment in action, watch live demonstrations and learn about roles in areas such as landscaping, forestry and environmental management.

A second event – a guided “walk and talk” in Campbell Park on Monday 8 June – will offer a closer look at what a typical day working outdoors involves.

The sessions are open to young people aged 13–18, with parents and carers also welcome to attend.

Emily Darlington MP said the Hospice is a “cornerstone of palliative care” in Milton Keynes, adding that the initiative helps raise awareness of both sustainable fashion and the importance of supporting local charities.

It’s a rare chance for teenagers to see what working in nature actually looks like – and how to get started in that kind of career.

Free guided bike rides return to Milton Keynes parks this spring

A free guided bike ride next month will offer a relaxed way to explore local parks and redways.

Organised by The Parks Trust, the ride is designed to be accessible for a wide range of abilities, with a steady pace and regular stops along the route.

Participants will be guided through scenic areas of the city while learning more about the surrounding landscape and green spaces.

The event is part of a wider programme encouraging people to get outdoors and stay active, particularly as the weather improves.

Places are limited and booking is required in advance.

It’s a low-pressure way to get back into cycling – especially if you don’t want to plan a route or go alone.
