Here’s what’s worth knowing in Milton Keynes this week.

Universal says Milton Keynes will be a gateway to new UK resort

Universal has told MK Digest that Milton Keynes will be one of the important gateways for visitors travelling to its new UK theme park and resort in Bedfordshire, with a shuttle-bus service expected to operate from Milton Keynes to the site.

The company has also confirmed that businesses in Milton Keynes are specifically encouraged to register through its supplier-interest form. Registrations are welcomed from companies of all sizes, including small independent businesses, with initial supplier opportunities expected to focus on construction, transport, logistics and food & beverage. Universal says information gathered through the form and its supplier events will be used when future procurement opportunities are promoted.

For jobs, residents can already join the Universal United Kingdom Resort Talent Community. Universal expects around 80% of employees to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas, and has confirmed directly to MK Digest that this includes Milton Keynes. Government figures put the project at nearly 20,000 construction jobs and a further 8,000 jobs once the resort opens in 2031.

The development will be Universal Destinations & Experiences' first major destination in the UK and Europe. Comcast NBCUniversal has committed more than £5 billion during the expected five years of construction, plus another £1 billion in capital investment during the first ten years of operation. The Government is supporting the wider project with £1.3 billion for regional and community infrastructure, including planned improvements to the A421 and Wixams station.

Enabling works are already underway, and Universal says opportunities for regional and UK businesses will continue to grow as development progresses. For Milton Keynes businesses, the practical step now is to register interest; for residents interested in future jobs, the Talent Community is already open. Registration does not mean a contract or job has been awarded, but it puts businesses and potential applicants into the channels Universal says it will use as opportunities develop.

New app lets cyclists compare Redway and road routes

A new independent route-planning app lets Milton Keynes cyclists compare routes based on how much of the journey uses Redways or roads – and its developer is asking local walkers and cyclists to put the beta through its paces.

MK Redway Navigator is a free browser-based app. Developer Gregory Tubby, who has worked in Milton Keynes since he was 16, says he began developing it in September after finding existing ways of navigating the Redways frustrating on a phone and encountering signs that appeared to point the wrong way. The current beta, v0.14.16, was released on 18 October.

For cycling, the app offers Max Redway, Balanced and Fastest choices so users can see the trade-off between estimated journey time, distance and road use. In the supplied example from Milton Keynes Central to Willen Lake Boat Hire, Max Redway shows 23 minutes / 5.5 km / 7% road, Balanced 21 minutes / 5.1 km / 13% road, and Fastest 19 minutes / 4.7 km / 46% road. These are planning estimates shown by the beta, not independently verified journey measurements.

There is also a separate walking mode, navigation guidance, optional spoken instructions, automatic rerouting, saved places and downloadable local map/routing files for offline use. Its Explore section brings together the five Cultural Routes published by Get Around MK and can calculate a route to join them. Get Around MK already provides an official journey planner, maps and wider transport information; MK Redway Navigator is an independent project focused specifically on walking and cycling.

Gregory says real-world testing is still limited and most testing so far has been automated or simulated, so he wants people in Milton Keynes to try the beta and report what goes wrong or feels awkward. He also says he used AI for a substantial amount of the development and testing, and the source code is publicly available. You can try the app in your browser at mkredway.co.uk

Milton Keynes reaches final four for UK City of Culture 2029

Milton Keynes has reached the final four in the competition to become the UK City of Culture 2029.

The city has been shortlisted alongside Blackpool, Sheffield and Wrexham. Each shortlisted place will receive £125,000 to help take forward elements of its bid, and an independent panel of judges will visit the four places before choosing the winner.

Milton Keynes City Council says thousands of residents, organisations and members of the creative community have helped shape the bid over the past nine months. The council also says the winner will receive a formal £10 million prize.

The final decision is expected in early 2027, when Milton Keynes will also be marking its 60th year.

New boards reveal Woughton’s hidden medieval village

New heritage boards have been installed around Woughton on the Green to help visitors spot the remains of a medieval village hidden in the landscape.

The Parks Trust says three interpretation boards have been added across the site, along with a new viewing panel overlooking Meadow Lane in Ouzel Valley Park. The panel helps visitors picture the wattle-and-daub houses that may once have lined the medieval track.

The project was developed with local young people from Offset Projects and local heritage groups, using research and artefacts from Milton Keynes Museum and The City Discovery Centre. Woughton was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, and the surviving earthworks include old tracks, house plots and some of the best-preserved ridge and furrow in Milton Keynes.

The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Parks Trust says the new interpretation is part of Look Again, a city-wide heritage trail designed to help people notice the history still visible across Milton Keynes.

You can explore the earthworks in Woughton on the Green and Ouzel Valley Park, and use The Parks Trust’s online guide to understand what you are looking at.
