Here’s what’s worth knowing in Milton Keynes this week.

Residents invited to respond to major Milton Keynes expansion proposals

Residents in and around north Milton Keynes are being encouraged to take part in a public consultation over major proposals that could eventually see thousands of new homes built near the city.

The consultation follows the Government’s launch of its New Towns Taskforce programme earlier this year, which identified Milton Keynes as one of several locations being considered for significant future growth.

According to information published by Haversham-cum-Little Linford Parish Council, early proposals being discussed by developers could include between 15,000 and 21,500 new homes to the north and east of Milton Keynes, alongside new transport infrastructure and community facilities.

Potential ideas referenced on the consultation website include rapid transit links, new schools, healthcare provision and even a possible new M1 junction known as “J14a”.

The parish council says many local residents have already expressed concerns about the possible impact on villages, countryside, traffic and infrastructure in the area.

No formal planning application has been submitted at this stage, and the current process is part of a wider Government consultation examining where future growth and development could take place across the country.

Milton Keynes was identified in the New Towns Taskforce report as a location capable of supporting significant future expansion, with wider figures suggesting up to 40,000 additional homes could eventually be delivered across the city over time.

Residents can view maps, background information and consultation details through the Haversham-cum-Little Linford Parish Council website before the consultation closes on 19 May.

Families invited to explore codebreaking history at Bletchley Park this half-term

Bletchley Park is hosting a series of family-friendly activities and interactive tours during the May half-term holidays, giving visitors the chance to step into the world of wartime codebreaking and secret intelligence.

Running from 24 to 29 May, the programme includes hands-on creative activities, family tours and opportunities to explore the historic site where Britain’s wartime codebreakers helped change the course of the Second World War.

Families visiting the site will be able to build replica codebreaking huts, create messages inspired by wartime communication systems and learn more about the people and machines behind the famous Enigma codebreaking operations.

Bletchley Park will also be running interactive outdoor tours designed for children and families, exploring what life was like at the secret wartime site and introducing visitors to the remarkable work carried out by codebreakers, engineers and intelligence staff during the 1940s.

Alongside the half-term activities, visitors can explore the restored wartime huts, exhibitions, immersive displays and historic mansion that form part of the wider museum experience.

Organisers say the sessions are designed to make the history of Bletchley Park more interactive and accessible for younger visitors while encouraging families to discover the stories behind one of Britain’s most important wartime sites together.

Children under eight can visit for free, while admission tickets also include an annual pass allowing visitors to return throughout the year.

Love Willen brings family fun and open water swimming to Willen Lake this Bank Holiday weekend

Families, fundraisers and open water swimmers are being invited to Willen Lake later this month as Willen Hospice teams up with Willen Lake and The Parks Trust for a day of community activities and fundraising.

Love Willen takes place on Saturday 23 May and will feature two main fundraising events alongside free family attractions and lakeside activities throughout the day.

The morning begins with “Make Waves for Willen”, an open water swim challenge where participants can complete as many laps as possible of a 300m course within 30 minutes. Swimmers can choose from two start times, with wetsuit hire, tow floats and finisher medals included as part of the event.

Later in the day, families can take part in a 4km fundraising walk around the lake, with activities and entertainment designed for children and adults alike. Organisers say the route will include a Teddy Trail, bubbles, puzzle stations, refreshments and opportunities to learn more about the local environment.

Willen Lake will also be offering free taster activities during the event, including Splash ‘N’ Play, Treetop Extreme, Pedalos and Adventure Golf.

The event is organised in support of Willen Hospice, which provides specialist care and support for local people living with life-limiting illnesses across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area.

Willen Hospice says community fundraising events like Love Willen help raise the £9.6 million needed each year to continue providing its services.

MK Food Bank launches “Great Cereal Topple” challenge to help local families

MK Food Bank is calling on schools, businesses and community groups across Milton Keynes to take part in its “Great Cereal Topple” campaign to help provide breakfast essentials for local families in need.

The charity is encouraging participants to build creative domino-style topple chains using donated cereal boxes, with all items going directly towards supporting people across the city experiencing financial hardship.

Last year, MK Food Bank distributed more than 10,000 children’s food parcels containing cereal, and organisers say they are hoping to match – or even exceed – that number through this year’s campaign.

According to the charity, cereal remains one of the most requested but hardest-to-stock items, making community donations especially important.

MK Food Bank says schools and workplaces are being invited to get involved by collecting cereal boxes and creating their own topple challenges, helping raise awareness while supporting families across Milton Keynes.

The organisation says demand for support remains high, with donations currently lower than usual, making fundraising campaigns and community collections increasingly important.

MK Food Bank provides emergency food support and wider assistance services for thousands of local people each year through referral partners and community networks across the city.

Milton Keynes fashion atelier celebrates first anniversary with luxury silk scarf workshop

An independent Milton Keynes fashion atelier is celebrating its first anniversary with a creative workshop focused on craftsmanship, fashion and hands-on design.

Hyness School of Design will mark the occasion with a “Luxury Silk Scarf Atelier” experience, where guests will have the opportunity to design and hand-finish their own silk scarves in a studio setting centred around creativity and slow fashion.

Founded by designer and creative director Precious Hyness, the atelier specialises in sewing education, fashion design, upcycling and creative workshops for adults and young creatives in Milton Keynes.

Organisers say the anniversary event is intended to bring together creativity, craftsmanship and community in an elegant but accessible environment, while introducing guests to fashion-focused design techniques in a relaxed and social setting.

The workshop reflects a growing interest in hands-on creative experiences and independent design-led businesses across Milton Keynes, particularly within the city’s developing creative and small-business community.

The atelier describes the silk scarf experience as a celebration of craftsmanship and thoughtful fashion design, encouraging participants to slow down and engage with the creative process in a more personal way.
