Here’s what’s worth knowing in Milton Keynes this week.
Dragon Boat Festival returns to Willen Lake this weekend
One of Milton Keynes' biggest summer community events returns to Willen Lake on Saturday 4 July, as dozens of teams take to the water for the annual Dragon Boat Festival.
The 23rd Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival is expected to attract up to 48 teams and several thousand spectators for a day of racing, fundraising and family entertainment. Teams will compete over a 200m course across the lake, while spectators can watch the action free of charge.
This year's festival is being run as an open fundraising event, allowing teams to support a charity of their choice. Charities already involved include Willen Hospice, MK Foodbank, Harry's Rainbow, Al's Pals and Camphill MK.
Away from the racing, visitors can enjoy food stalls, entertainment and family activities throughout the day. Prizes will be awarded for race winners, best-dressed crews and fundraising achievements, helping to create a colourful festival atmosphere around the lake.
With dragon boat racing, community fundraising and plenty to see on shore, the event has become one of the largest annual summer gatherings held at Willen Lake.

Free Junior Park Rangers programme opens for Milton Keynes schools
The Parks Trust is encouraging local schools to sign up for its free Junior Park Rangers programme, giving children the chance to learn about nature, care for local green spaces and spend more time outdoors.
Designed for pupils in Years 4 to 6, the programme provides schools with a ready-made club packed with activities and resources focused on wildlife, conservation and the environment. The Parks Trust says the scheme is completely free for Milton Keynes schools and participating children.
The charity, which cares for more than 6,000 acres of parkland across Milton Keynes, offers a wide range of outdoor learning opportunities for both primary and secondary schools. These include assemblies, workshops, youth programmes and curriculum-linked sessions delivered both in classrooms and local parks.
Sarah Griffiths, Outdoor Learning and Interpretation Manager at The Parks Trust, said the organisation engages thousands of young people with nature each year.
"Our education initiatives are all about caring for nature locally, and throughout the year we're proud to engage thousands of young MK residents with their surrounding environments," she said. She added that the Trust's learning team and volunteers are passionate about helping children connect with nature and care for the environment in the future.
Outdoor learning sessions cover a variety of topics including Environmental Heroes, Life of Plants, Wild Wellbeing and River Explorers, with activities taking place across Milton Keynes' parks, lakes and green spaces. Bookings for the 2026–27 academic year are now open, including registration for the Junior Park Rangers programme.
The Parks Trust is encouraging local teachers, governors and parents interested in outdoor education opportunities to find out more about the scheme.

Under the Arches Theatre returns for ninth summer season
Buckinghamshire's unique open-air Arches Theatre is preparing to welcome audiences back this summer with a programme of theatre, live music and family entertainment beneath its historic railway arches.
Located in Clifton Reynes, near Milton Keynes, the outdoor venue is built beneath four disused railway arches that once formed part of the Midland Railway's Bedford to Northampton line. The theatre opened in 2018 after the arches were transformed into an outdoor performance space.
The Summer 2026 season begins on Saturday 1 August and features a varied programme including Prince Kaspar, Around the World in Eighty Days, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Romeo & Juliet, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Lady Windermere's Fan, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, along with live music from BeatleMania and Not The Rolling Stones.
The Arches Theatre describes itself as "Buckinghamshire's quirkiest outdoor theatre" and says audiences can enjoy everything from family-friendly productions and Shakespeare to classic plays, whodunnits and live music. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, drinks and their own chairs to enjoy performances in the theatre's open-air setting.

Architect, playwright, soldier and spy exhibition opens at Stowe House
A new exhibition exploring the life and work of one of Britain's most remarkable historical figures opens at Stowe House today.
Stowe and Sir John Vanbrugh: Architecture, Politics and Power runs from 29 June to 31 August and is included with admission to Stowe House. The exhibition, located in the Marble Saloon, explores Vanbrugh's influence on Stowe and his wider impact on British architecture. Advance tickets for house visits are released one month before each visit date.
Vanbrugh is best known as the architect behind some of England's grandest country houses, including Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace. Alongside his architectural achievements, he also enjoyed careers as a playwright, soldier and political figure, and undertook intelligence work during his lifetime.
The exhibition explores Vanbrugh's connection to Stowe House, where he was commissioned by Sir Richard Temple to help transform the estate during the early eighteenth century. Through historic illustrations, newly commissioned photography and original plans, visitors can discover how his vision helped shape one of Britain's most celebrated country houses and gardens.
Written by historian Rory Fraser, the exhibition also highlights Vanbrugh-designed features that can still be seen in the Stowe gardens today.
🕒 Opens today (Mon 29 Jun) – Mon 31 Aug, 10:30am – 4:30pm

Willen Hospice launches Cycle Sportive challenge for 2026
Cyclists across Milton Keynes are being invited to sign up for Willen Hospice's Cycle Sportive 2026, with three routes available through the Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire countryside.
Taking place on Sunday 6 September, the fully supported charity ride offers distances of 37 miles, 65 miles and 100 miles, making it suitable for both first-time sportive riders and experienced cyclists.
The event starts and finishes at The Good Gym in Milton Keynes and includes feed stations, water stops and support vehicles along the route. All participants will receive a medal and refreshments at the finish line.
Entry costs £35 when booked in advance or £40 on the day. Riders are encouraged to raise at least £75 for Willen Hospice, although a new £100 self-funded entry option is also available for those who prefer not to fundraise.
Nikki Poole, Community Fundraising and Events Manager at Willen Hospice, said the event brings together the local cycling community while helping fund the charity's expert care and support services for local families.
This year's ride will also honour volunteer Preston Ayres, who planned and routed the Hospice's Cycle Sportive for the past eight years and sadly passed away recently.
